Dental Implants Ho Chi Minh – Don’t risk waiting for too long!
Many of our patients here in Ho Chi Minh ask us what happens if they don’t get dental implants right away to replace a missing tooth. They’re wondering how long they can wait before getting then the surgery done. While missing a tooth is certainly an inconvenience, is it that much of a health risk?
What are patients’ reasons for not getting dental implants in Ho Chi Minh
In general, patients’ questions are generally motivated from 2 major concerns.
- Fear about pain Aduring the process, surgery and recovery
- Anxiety about the costs of the procedure and how they fit them into their budget
Why you should not postpone getting your dental implants
It is common that patients don’t realize that waiting too long to get their teeth replaced with implants can have severe negative effects on their dental as well as overall health. While a missing tooth may seem like a merely cosmetic issue, the truth is that left untreated, it can cause major problems for your gums, jawbone and even your surrounding teeth.
Putting off or forgoing dental implant surgery only has negative effects makes it more likely having to do even more dental work than if the patient had dealt with the problem directly. This of course involves higher costs and longer procedures.
There is a number of things that can go wrong. The more time a bad tooth stays in a patient’s mouth, the more harm it can do to your adjacent teeth. Going as little as 12 months with a missing tooth causes the bone to atrophy.
The bone density as well as its height start to decrease and deteriorate almost immediately. After a year, instead of a single dental implant, the patient most probably has to do a bone graft as well. The bone graft procedure can be painful and leads to higher compared to a simple tooth implant.
Another undesired consequence of not getting dental implants is the positioning of your teeth. Teeth shift in response to changes in your mouth. Large molars in the back of your mouth can tip forward into a implants space. Waiting too long can lead for the space to diminish which in turn leaves no space for the new tooth. Your adjacent teeth begin to shift. Even though it’s a very gradual process, it begins directly after you lose a tooth.
The opposing tooth without a partner can erupt out of your arch and create problems with your bite. Problems with the eruption can also lead to temporomandibular joint pain (TMJ or TMD) – which causes chronic pain in your jaw.
The last two mentioned cases oftentimes require you to undergo some form of orthodontics, including braces, clear retainers or a temporary anchorage device to upright the tooth and make space for the implant. This is another process that’s longer, more costly and simply more unpleasant.
Without having all teeth in the right place, you will bite your tongue and cheeks more. While this doesn’t sounds like a big problem, it can sooner or later lead to problems with eating.
Patients that are worried about the cost of dental implants should remember that the procedure when done right away is quite affordable. However, if you decide to wait the costs can exceed the original costs a lot.
It is understandable that some patients are anxious about the process, but irrational fears should never impact your health decisions. In reality, dental implant surgery is never as bad as patients think it will be. For many patients, the surgery has been a life-changing experience.
